Radiation reaction and gravitational waves in the effective field theory approach

چکیده
We compute the contribution to the Lagrangian from the leading order (2.5 post-Newtonian) radiation reaction and the quadrupolar gravitational waves emitted from a binary system using the effective field theory (EFT) approach of Goldberger and Rothstein. We use an initial value formulation of the underlying (quantum) framework to implement retarded boundary conditions and describe these real-time dissipative processes. We also demonstrate why the usual scattering formalism of quantum field theory inadequately accounts for these. The methods discussed here should be useful for deriving real-time quantities (including radiation reaction forces and gravitational wave emission) and hereditary terms in the post-Newtonian approximation (including memory, tail and other causal, history-dependent integrals) within the EFT approach. We also provide a consistent and correct formulation of the radiation sector in the equivalent effective field theory approach of Kol and Smolkin.

Radiation reaction at 3.5 post-Newtonian order in effective field theory
We derive the radiation reaction forces on a compact binary inspiral through 3.5 order in the postNewtonian expansion using the effective field theory approach. We utilize a recent formulation of Hamilton’s variational principle that rigorously extends the usual Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms to dissipative systems, including the inspiral of a compact binary from the emission of gravitat...
متن کاملControversies in the History of the Radiation Reaction problem in General Relativity
Beginning in the early 1950s, experts in the theory of general relativity debated vigorously whether the theory predicted the emission of gravitational radiation from binary star systems. For a time, doubts also arose on whether gravitational waves could carry any energy. Since radiation phenomena have played a key role in the development of 20th century field theories, it is the main purpose o...
متن کاملA ug 2 00 0 Gravitational Radiation Theory and Light Propagation ∗
The paper gives an introduction to the gravitational radiation theory of isolated sources and to the propagation properties of light rays in radiative gravitational fields. It presents a theoretical study of the generation, propagation, back–reaction, and detection of gravitational waves from astrophysical sources. After reviewing the various quadrupole–moment laws for gravitational radiation i...
متن کاملDoes short-term exposure to Wi-Fi waves affect the cognitive functions of the mind?
Introduction: In recent years, we have seen a tremendous growth in communications devices, such as mobiles and tablets. Also, the appeal to connect to the Internet through wireless systems has increased significantly. Given these changes in everyday life, the approach to cognitive works and problem-solving and decision-making in a complex system that has become increasingly imp...
متن کاملPeriodic solutions of the Einstein equations for binary systems.
Solutions of the Einstein equations which are periodic and have standing gravitational waves, in the weak-field zone, are valuable approximations to more physically realistic solutions with outgoing waves. A variational principle for the periodic solutions is found which has the power to provide, for binary systems with weak gravitational radiation, an accurate estimate of the relationship betw...
